Escape rooms explained

What is an escape room?

An escape room is a team game where you have 60 minutes to get out of a themed room. You search for clues, crack codes and solve puzzles together. A game master follows the game and helps you on if you get stuck.

How does an escape room work?

First a short briefing, then 60 minutes in the room with hints when you need them. Afterwards you find out how it went.

  1. Briefing

Arrive 10 minutes before your booked time. The game master tells you the story, explains the rules and answers questions before the door closes.

  2. 60 minutes in the room

The clock starts when the door closes. Everything you need is in the room: objects to examine, locks to open and puzzles that lead on to the next step.

  3. Hints when you get stuck

The game master follows the game on camera and audio and gives hints when you need them, so nobody stands still for long.

  4. Out in time?

The game ends when you get out or when time runs out. The door can always be opened from the inside. You are never really locked in.

What do you do in the room?

You work together. You search the room, tell each other what you find and combine the clues: one person spots a pattern, another finds the code that fits. The puzzles are about logic, attention and communication, not general knowledge or strength. Every room has its own story, from mysteries and heists to adventure and horror.

Several of our rooms come in two identical versions, so two teams can start at the same time (when both rooms are free at the same time) and race to get out first.

How long does an escape room take?

The game itself takes 60 minutes. Allow about 90 minutes on site including the briefing before and a moment afterwards.

Do you need to have played before?

No. No previous experience or special knowledge is needed. The game master explains everything before you go in and helps during the game. Playing for the first time? Pick a room with a lower difficulty (it is shown on every room).

Who can play?

Anyone who likes solving problems together: friends, families, colleagues and couples. You do not need to be experienced players. If someone in your group has limited mobility, the venue is happy to answer questions about the rooms before you book.

How many can play?

A room takes 2–8 players depending on the room. The number is shown on every room. Larger groups book several rooms at the same time, so you can be 20–33 people at the same time, depending on the city.

Children

The age is set per room and shown in the list here and on every room’s page. Rooms with scary elements or adult themes have a higher age and are not suitable for children. Wondering what applies to younger children and accompanying adults in a particular room? Ask the venue before you book.
